Monkey Pox and Rabbits Please don't abandon your pet rabbit because of fears about monkey pox! The suspected rabbit infection, reported in June 2002, was a false alarm. Testing by the CDC confirmed the rabbit was NOT infected. To the best of everyone's knowledge, no rabbit has ever been infected with monkeypox in North America." Remember that rabbits stay healthier when housed indoors. Under no circumstances should you abandon a pet rabbit outside. If you have concerns about monkey pox, please contact your local public health offices. For information about the monkey pox situation, visit www.DHFS.state.wi.us. If you have questions about rabbits and monkey pox, please contact the Wisconsin HRS at 608-232-7044.
